by

Veteran Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, better known as Mr. Ibu, has revealed why he ended his boxing career to become an actor.

In an interview with the Punch, the Nollywood star disclosed he was once a boxer. He said he quit boxing when a Delta boy battered his face in a championship fight.

He said, ‘’I would have been a boxer. I used to be a boxer. I was doing well until I went for a championship in Delta State.

‘’The boy I fought with was an idiot; he gave me a beating I would never forget. That boy changed my face and made me hate anything that had to do with gloves.

‘’After the fight, I looked in the mirror and I could not even recognise myself. I could see with only one eye for sometime due to
the punches he dealt me. That was the incident that made me quit boxing.’’

Over the years, there has been reports that young and upcoming Nollywood actors have sex in exchange for roles. In a recent interview with The Sun, John Okafor popularly known as Mr Ibu revealed that actors no longer have have sex, but pay producers for roles.
It is not sex-for-role that is in vogue now but money-for-role. People are paying to be part of productions. It is rubbish and I will keep criticising the practice and I tell you, I will get to the root of this matter,” the actor said.

Advising the upcoming actors, Okafor said; “The only thing I want to tell them is ‘to take am easy.’ Why should they use their hard earned money to buy roles? They should calm down. If you go for an audition and fail, go home.

Today might be someone else but tomorrow, it could be you. If there is any reason to be in any production, it should be by merit. Whatever you don’t know, ask questions.”
The talented Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award nominee is currently a member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria Board of Trustees.

Mr Ibu is also currently working on his new projects titled “Ibu Runs Mad in America,” and  “Ozuzueke.”
