Carlos Slim Spending $1.4 Billion on Complex in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY – Billionaire Carlos Slim, considered the richest person in the world, is investing $1.4 billion in Plaza Carso, a Mexico City complex that will include movie theaters, museums, housing and commercial space. The project seeks to restore a rundown area in the capital, Slim said during a presentation Tuesday, adding that it would be similar to another development he spearheaded a few years ago in Mexico City.

Plaza Carso’s crown jewel will be the Soumaya Museum, which will be inaugurated on Nov. 30 as part of the Mexican bicentennial celebrations.

The museum, which is currently located in the southern section of the capital and bears the name of Slim’s late wife, will feature about 64,000 art works, representing the financier’s entire collection.

The Plaza Carso project has created about 5,000 direct jobs and 10,000-15,000 indirect jobs, with more jobs expected to be created by the businesses that open in the complex.

Telcel, Grupo Sanborns and Condumex, among other companies, will have offices at Plaza Carso.

The facility will use environmentally friendly technologies, such as a rainwater capture system, solar panels to generate electricity and energy-saving windows.

Slim’s Grupo Carso has been making large investments in real estate projects across Mexico, including the $230 million Ciudad Jardin on the outskirts of the Federal District.

Slim, whose fortune has been estimated at some $53 billion, has interests in telecommunications, construction and hospitality, among other businesses. EFE
