Chocolate City Music CEO, M.I Abaga appeared as a guest on Sunday on the YNaija TV-produced Rubbin’ Minds show on Channels Television.

While on the show, M.I talked about several subjects including his CEO position at Chocolate City, relationship with Jesse Jagz and Ice Prince, and more.

Here are six things we learned from the interview.

  1. M.I said his job as a Chocolate City CEO is ‘terrible’

In June 2015, M.I was announced as the new Chocolate City CEO; taking over the position Audu Maikori held for years.

When quizzed about the how the job has been, M.I said it was ‘terrible’ but he loves it still despite its obvious rigours.

“Terrible Terrible,” he said.

He went on to say, “I love it. I love going to work. It’s hardwork. Shout-out to everybody that has a 9-5 job out there and then balancing it with my career and also being the guy that takes the bullets, when things don’t work out the way they should. However I am blessed and it’s the best experience.”

2. Chocolate City is ‘looking to sign more artistes’

In the course of the show, M.I explained that Chocolate City currently houses 12 artistes and revealed the label is not done yet as it is “looking to sign more artistes”.

3. Chocolate City will be launching other labels

M.I noted that the music company is now being positioned as a ‘corporate business’ now rather than a boutique brand people knew it as.

“We had a great year last year and it was shocking to everybody that even though our year was great, everybody said ‘Chocolate City what is going on?’ ‘What is M.I doing?’ and I just told the staff and the board and said we have to look past that and understand that we are becoming more of a corporate business than a boutique brand that people can be excited about.”

He then revealed that the company will be launching a few other record labels similar to Ice Prince‘s Super Cool Cats and Jesse Jagz‘s Jagz Nation.

“Jesse has his own label under Chocolate City same with Ice Prince. We are going to open few more labels like that and you are going to hear less of Chocolate City even though we’ll be doing more business.”

4. ‘Ice Prince is the most easiest but also the most difficult to work with’

When asked about his working relationship with Ice Prince, M.I said due to the Aboki rapper’s opinionated character, he could be difficult to work with, at the same time easy to work with it.

“Ice Prince is the easiest but also the most difficult person. He’s so opinionated and he knows what he wants and he is a go-getter which makes it easy but also difficult because you are always catching up when you meet him again. He’s always on to the next thing and his zeal is something that has been apparent since he was 16 and 17 in Jos. You know you could always see he was going to be a big star and conquer Africa and the world as he has done is doing.”

5. Jesse Jagz was still close to Chocolate City during the period of his hiatus away from the label.

In June 2013, Jesse Jagz announced he was parting ways with Chocolate City; a record label which had been a musical abode to him and his brother, M.I.

Although he made a return to the label in March 2015, the manner in which he left 2 years earlier made people believe that there was bad blood between the two siblings.

However M.I told Ebuka on Rubbin’ Minds that things were fine between them at the time as Jesse was even close to the team while he was away.

He opined that Jesse Jagz’s decision to leave Choc City was ‘right’ because he needed to ‘find an identity outside Choc Boi’.

M.I then divulged the information that work on Jesse Jagz’s album was done as the Jargo rapper called him two days ago to share the good news.

6. M.I is not interested in going international

Fans have wondered why the Choc City rapper hasn’t made a concrete attempt at taking his career international.

While on the show, the One Naira rapper expressed his disinterest in pursuing global fame.

He said, “I’m very weird about the international thing. I’m not interested at all. I’m interested in building Africa and building in Nigeria. I think in that way, the biggest thing we can do internationally is to set up our businesses and our industry right here. America is very funny. You know I had the opportunity.”
